Gata de Gorgos is famous for its craft traditions, above all its weaving. All over town there are shops and workshops where baskets, hats and furniture are made by hand from cane and palm leaf. It is not only an important part of the local heritage but a living industry, and it gives the town its particular character.
The old centre

The historic heart of Gata is small but full of atmosphere: narrow streets, whitewashed houses and welcoming little squares. On the main square, Plaza España, locals gather for a chat and a coffee. The mood is easy-going and you feel welcome quickly.
This is where we bought our furniture. It isn't expensive, and yet you find beautiful wooden pieces and woven accessories — exactly the Spanish, slightly Ibiza feel you want at home. I even picked up the lookalike Artisan chairs here for €185 each instead of about €800. There is lovely ceramic work too. I am genuinely in love with this village.
If you want to know more about the local culture there is the Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel, a charming church looking out over the town. And don't miss the local markets, where alongside fresh fruit and vegetables you find genuinely handmade things.
Living in the old centre
Homes in the centre of Gata have a rustic feel, often with thick stone walls and traditional wooden beams. Some have been renovated for modern comfort while keeping their historic character. You live in the middle of the community here, where the morning smells of fresh bread.

The setting
A paradise for anyone who loves the outdoors
Gata de Gorgos sits at the foot of the Montgó massif, an impressive area of countryside that invites walking and exploring. The surrounding hills and vineyards make a wonderful setting for walks, bike rides and quiet time outdoors.
And there is the Río Gorgos, the river running through the town, which has played an important part in its history. In wetter spells the river fills, and the soft sound of running water adds to the mood of the place.
Tip
Walk up to one of the viewpoints nearby, where you get panoramic views over both the coast and the countryside inland.
Close to everything you need
One of Gata de Gorgos's real advantages is where it sits. The town itself is quiet and unspoilt, yet it is only 10 to 15 minutes' drive from the coastal towns of Jávea and Dénia. You get the best of both: the calm and space of a village, with the coast's amenities and beaches close by.
Gata has everything you need day to day: supermarkets, local shops, pharmacies and good restaurants serving the local cooking. And if you want more choice, larger shopping centres such as Portal de la Marina are a short drive away.
