Gata de Gorgos is famous for its artisanal traditions, especially basket weaving. All around the town, you’ll find shops and workshops where handmade baskets, hats, and furniture made from wicker and palm leaves are crafted. This is not only an important part of the local heritage but also a vibrant industry that gives the town its unique character.
The Old Town:
The historic heart of Gata is small but charming, with narrow streets, whitewashed houses, and cozy little squares. At the central Plaza España, locals gather for a chat and a cup of coffee. The atmosphere is relaxed, and you’ll quickly feel at home. We bought our furniture here. It’s not that expensive, but you can find beautiful wooden furniture and wicker accessories. It really gives that Spanish or Ibiza vibe to your home. I even scored the look-alike Artisan chairs for just €185 each instead of around €800. You can also buy stunning ceramics here. I’ve truly fallen in love with this little village.
For those wanting to learn more about local culture, there is the Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel, a charming church overlooking the town. And don’t forget the local markets, where in addition to fresh vegetables and fruits, you’ll find authentic handmade products.
The homes in the center of Gata have a rustic feel, often with thick stone walls and traditional wooden beams. Some properties have been renovated to offer modern comfort while retaining their historical charm. Here, you live amidst the community, where you can smell the aroma of freshly baked bread in the mornings.
Tip: The most beautiful hats can be found at Zahati. Truly stunning.
Gata de Gorgos is located at the foot of the Montgó massif, an impressive natural area that invites you to hike and explore. The surrounding hills and vineyards create a stunning backdrop for walks, bike rides, and quiet moments in nature.
Then there’s the Río Gorgos, the river that flows through the town and plays an important role in Gata’s history. During rainy periods, the river swells, and the gentle babbling of water forms a soothing sound that enhances the atmosphere of the town.
Tip: Take a walk to one of the viewpoints in the area, where you can enjoy panoramic views of the coastline and the countryside.
One of the great advantages of Gata de Gorgos is its central location. Although the town itself is quiet and authentic, it is only a 10-15 minute drive from the coastal towns of Jávea and Dénia. This means you have the best of both worlds: the peace and quiet of a village and the amenities and beaches of the coast nearby.
Shops and amenities:
Gata has everything you need for daily life: supermarkets, local shops, pharmacies, and cozy restaurants where you can enjoy the local cuisine. For those who want more options, large shopping centers like Portal de la Marina are just a short drive away.
Gata offers a variety of living options, depending on your preferences:
Living in Gata de Gorgos means choosing a life in balance: combining peace and tradition with the vibrancy of the nearby coast. Here, you can enjoy the beauty of the Spanish countryside, while never being far from the beaches, restaurants, and shops of the Costa Blanca. Also, the property prices here per square meter are incredibly low, while the location is top-notch. We’re fans. Check out our listings.
