Jávea (Xàbia): It has everything – beach, nature, and the town center

Gé Hoeijmakers, makelaar in Javea Old town

Imagine this; a morning walk on Montgó, in the afternoon you stroll through the narrow streets, have a drink by the harbor, and end the day with the sunset on the beach. This place truly has it all. Welcome to Jávea, also called Xàbia by the locals (who speak Valencian). This charming coastal town on the Costa Blanca offers everything your heart desires: Beautiful beaches, a rich history, and a relaxed lifestyle that many can only dream of.

But what makes Jávea truly special? It’s not just a place you visit to enjoy a vacation; Jávea feels like home, even if it’s your first time here.

The Old Town

Authentic charm and history

The Old Town of Jávea, also known as El Pueblo, is a place where time seems to have stood still. The historic center, located a few kilometers inland, breathes that atmosphere. The old fortification wall still runs through the town center, reminding you of the city’s history. Here, you wander through a maze of narrow streets, surrounded by whitewashed houses and facades made of characteristic sandstone. The shade from the wrought iron balconies provides a welcome coolness during a summer day.

Highlights of the Old Town:

  • Iglesia de San Bartolomé: This impressive Gothic church from the 14th century is not only an architectural masterpiece but also a symbol of the city. In the past, the church offered protection against pirates, and now it serves as a peaceful retreat in the middle of the town.
  • Mercado Municipal de Abastos: The covered market is the place to buy fresh fish, vegetables, and regional delicacies. Locals here love to share their best recipes for an authentic Spanish dish.
  • Plaça de Baix: This cozy village square is the social heart of the Old Town. Sit on one of the terraces, order a café con leche, and watch life go by around you.

Living in the Old Town means choosing authenticity. Think of beautiful townhouses with courtyards, traditional balconies, and historical details. Many of these homes have been carefully renovated and offer a unique blend of old charm and modern comfort. Perfect for those seeking peace in a characterful setting. Here, you’ll find top-notch restaurants and beautiful shops. Our favorites? Chola Gastro (fantastic inner courtyard), Restaurante Portixol (great value for money), and La Trastienda Wine (top wines). What’s still on our wishlist? Cajita Azul. But you really need to make a reservation in advance. We often don’t plan that far ahead, so we haven’t gotten around to it yet.

Arenal

The vibrant heart of Jávea

When you say Jávea, you say Playa del Arenal. This lively beach is the social and tourist center of the town. During the day, you come here to sunbathe, swim, or indulge in water sports. The wide, golden sand beach is perfect for families, and thanks to the bustling promenade, you never have to walk far for an ice-cold drink or a delicious meal. This area is a bit touristy. You can compare it to Scheveningen, fun, busy, and commercial.

Why live near Arenal?
The neighborhood around Playa del Arenal offers a unique mix of coziness and convenience.

  • Amenities: Everything you need is within reach. Supermarkets, shops, restaurants, and cafés are within walking distance, as is the promenade.
  • Homes: Here, you’ll find luxurious apartment complexes just a stone’s throw from the beach. Many properties feature balconies or terraces with sea views. There are also modern villas available in the streets just outside the hustle and bustle of the promenade.

Hotspots not to miss:

  • Otra vez: André Hazes on the wall, bitterballen (Dutch snacks) on the menu, and wallpaper featuring Amsterdam.
  • All the restaurants of the Jávea Group: Here you have many options, such as a cool Ibiza-style beach bar like La Siesta, live music at Bambula, breakfast at Chabada, or a more luxurious dinner at Bohemians. Fun spots, though we don’t think the quality is top-notch. Still, we go there because they offer fun concepts.
  • Palmito Beach: A lovely beach bar, and behind it, you can rent a boat. Bali/Ibiza-style umbrellas and great food.

Living at Playa del Arenal means living where others go on vacation. Whether you enjoy a peaceful morning walk on the beach or a lively evening on the promenade, here you’ll find everything you need for a relaxed and social lifestyle.

The natural beauty of Jávea

Jávea is not only praised for its beaches and historical charm but also for the spectacular nature in and around the town. The Montgó mountain, which towers above the town like a guardian, is one of the most iconic landmarks. It is also known as the “elephant mountain.” Hikes in the nature park surrounding Montgó offer breathtaking views of the town and the Mediterranean Sea.

And then there are the hidden gems along the coastline:

  • Cala Granadella: This secluded cove with crystal-clear water is a paradise for snorkelers and kayakers. No wonder this beach is often mentioned as one of the most beautiful in Spain.
  • Cabo de la Nao: The rugged cliffs of Cabo de la Nao offer spectacular views and are a favorite spot for hikers.
  • Cova Tallada: A historic cave that can only be reached via an adventurous hike or by kayak. Here, you can feel the history in the walls that were once carved for the construction of local churches and castles.
  • Playa del Portichol: This is also sometimes called the beach with the blue doors. It’s a beautiful pebble cove with a cool restaurant. Here, you really get Ibiza vibes. We love having lunch at Cala Clemence, where there is often a DJ on the weekends during summer.
